Upon TikTok Shop’s debut in the United States in September 2023, it positioned itself as a direct competitor to Amazon’s e-commerce supremacy. Leveraging its expansive user base of 1 billion monthly active users, particularly targeting the younger Millennial, Gen-Z, and Gen Alpha demographics, TikTok Shop aimed to disrupt the market. 

Amazon, while not unfamiliar with social commerce endeavours, previously ventured into this domain with initiatives such as the “Spark” app in 2019, modelled after Instagram, and the “Inspire” shopping app in the USA, inspired by TikTok’s success. However, these ventures failed to achieve significant user engagement or sales compared to TikTok’s impact.
Now, with the collaborative efforts of Meta and Amazon, the latter is poised to bolster its position in the social commerce arena and counter TikTok’s advancements in the market.
